The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Frodo and Sam are in the field with the scarecrow, in the close up shot they're a lot closer together than in the wider shot. Nothing to do with perspective - check out the amount of green corn in front of Frodo in the two shots. The scarecrow also changes place and it's sometimes next to some corn and sometimes not. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: In Balin's tomb, just before the Orcs break in and the fight begins, watch the Hobbits behind Gandalf. In the front view, they are huddled together in close proximity. When the shot changes to the rear view, you can only see two Hobbits (Pippin and Sam) behind Gandalf because they are much more spaced out. When the camera comes back to the front view, they are close together again. (00:27:24)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: At the Council of Elrond, when Gimli says, "I will be dead before I see the ring in the hands of an Elf!" in the close-up shot the two Elves on the sides of Legolas stand up. In the next wide shot the Elf on Legolas' right is just getting up. (01:42:45)

Continuity mistake: After finding Sam under the window Gandalf throws Sam on the table. In some shots Sam's shoulders are at the edge of the table and in some, it's not. Under Sam's shoulders on the table in some shots, there are assorted papers that change position and in two shots no paper at all. In the shot from the front, where Gandalf is slamming Sam down, the candle shown is much shorter than the candle shown in the other shots. (00:42:25)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Just after Gandalf enters Bag End for the first time he looks the map of Middle Earth on the table. In first shot when he is grabbing the map, you can see that there are two scrolls and a flat empty paper stacked on the map. In next shot, there is only one scroll and a paper with some kind of pattern on it. (00:16:20)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Pippin causes the skeletal body to fall into the well at Balin's Tomb. When the head falls in, Pippin spins around and behind him we see the body start to fall in and the pail is right next to the body. In the close-up shot of the body falling into the well the pail is not on the well. Then in the next few shots the pail is yet again sitting on the stone well showing the chain and pail falling into the well. (00:26:50)

Continuity mistake: When the Balrog's whip wraps around Gandalf's ankle and pulls him off the bridge in Moria, you can see that the surface of the bridge where he was standing is perfectly flat and smooth. We cut to Frodo screaming, then back to Gandalf, who is now hanging onto an easy-to-grip groove in the rock. (00:39:45)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Other mistake: In the credits, the word "Technical" is spelled "Technicial" in one instance - on the right side, used in the phrase "technicial continuity." In amongst the grip section. (01:35:25)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When the Fellowship is sailing down the river (through the two statues) the foot of the left statue looks as if it's at the same level as the water. Then in the next scene (camera angle from above) the foot is not at water level; it appears to be on a rock. (01:08:35)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Gandalf and Saruman are about to fight, Gandalf switches his staff from his left to his right hand. When Saruman smashes him against the wall, the staff is back in the left hand. (00:48:20)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When the hobbits first start to run away from Farmer Maggot, they are running through the corn, which is much taller than them. Two seconds later, when the camera angle changes to the wide view (you can see all four hobbits running through the corn), their heads are even with, if not slightly above the corn. After it shows that the corn is about their height, there is the last shot of them coming out of the corn field and the stalks are again much taller than them. (00:50:20)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When the invisible Bilbo returns to Bag End he chats with Gandalf, then leaves dropping the Ring on the floor near the door. In the first shot of it after he's left, the Ring is touching a crack in the tile. When he gets closer, the Ring's moved away from it. (00:28:50)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Gandalf arrives at the Shire, some children start chasing the wagon yelling for fireworks. At this point we can see a Hobbit couple watching the children run past. The female Hobbit places her hand on her hip, and then in a close-up, she puts her hand on her hip again. (00:13:55)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: At the very start of the film when Gandalf is in his wagon, Frodo stops him with: "You're late." Gandalf stops his wagon quite a way from the bank that Frodo appears on. Gandalf sternly delivers his line and moments later they both burst out laughing. Then Frodo almost steps onto the wagon which was much further from the bank during the first part of the exchange.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After Arwen has crossed the Ford of Bruinen and is challenged by the Ringwraith Witch-King, she draws her sword and holds it high and ready to strike. Arwen then calls upon the waters of the river for assistance. When the rush of water with horses' heads comes around the bend and into view there is a clear shot of Arwen's back as she is watching the water come down on the Ringwraiths and she is not holding her sword up. Shortly after all the Ringwraith's are swept away, there is a scene of Arwen's face and upper body and she is still holding the sword high and ready to strike. (01:19:40)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Gimli jumps up on Balin's tomb we see a close up and his face is visible, with his axes either side. From behind, his axes are crossed in front of him, and should be practically covering his face. (00:27:35)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After the hobbits take the tumble from farmer Maggot's field, they land in a heap with twigs in their hair. Frodo stands on the road and looks down it. He says, "I think we should get off the road" and the twigs are there. He looks back down the road and the smoke and leaves come swirling at him, he yells, "Get off the road" - no twigs. They hide from the wraith, then make their escape. Merry says, "What was that?" - and they have the twigs in their hair again. (00:51:10)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Frodo is pulling Sam out of the water at the very end of the movie, the underwater shots show Sam's hand grasping Frodo's wrist (Frodo's palm is against the inside of Sam's wrist), but as soon as he gets him above water, Frodo has a grip on Sam that forces Sam to keep his palm facing away from Frodo's arm (Frodo's palm is against the back of Sam's arm). Short of releasing Sam completely, there is no way to change grip like that in between the two shots. (01:31:05)

Visible crew/equipment: After starting their four day journey through the long dark of Moria, a few shots later Gandalf pulls on his hat brim, and just as he walks (with Legolas close behind) to his left (towards the viewer's right), up some stairs, the black electrical cable leading from the staff to under the robe's left sleeve is visible. Aragorn: Gentlemen! We do not stop 'til nightfall.
Pippin: But what about breakfast?
Aragorn: You've already had it.
Pippin: We've had one, yes. But what about second breakfast?
[Aragorn stares at him, then walks off.]
Merry: Don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip.
Pippin: What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn't he?
Merry: I wouldn't count on it.

More trivia for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Question: Since Gandalf knew how dangerous the ring was, why did he give it to Frodo and tell him that he must destroy the ring? It would make more sense to either do it himself or find someone else to do it.

Answer: The temptation of the Ring is directly proportional to the power and ambition of the bearer. To someone like Gandalf - a mighty wizard who wants to save the world - the temptation would, over time, prove to be too much, and he's realistic enough to understand that about himself. With an ordinary hobbit who only wants a nice meal and some peace and quiet, the Ring has a lot less to work with.

Answer: Gandalf can't take the ring because he would be tempted to use it, and it would ultimately corrupt him. This is true for nearly anyone who has it for any length of time, except hobbits for some unknown reason. Gandalf recognized this in Bilbo, and later in Frodo.
